The Wild Sheep Foundation has been authorized by the Fort Belknap Indian Community to sell at live auction (1) bighorn sheep tag. This population of sheep is part of the well-known Montana Missouri River Breaks sheep population. Sheep in the Little Rockies of the Fort Belknap Reservation travel between and are connected to the Missouri River Breaks population. Bighorn sheep hunting on the Fort Belknap Reservation resumed in 2014 and since that time included 3 hunts with rams that scored 191 in 2014, 185.2 in 2016 and 195.7 in 2016. All came out of the Little Rockies on the southern end of the Ft. Belknap Indian Reservation. The hunter will be allowed to hunt on all Tribal lands including those in both the Little Rockies and those that border the Missouri River Breaks in the south west corner of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.
The season for this hunt will be from October 1 through December 31, 2019. Fort Belknap will provide a guide, but the hunter can bring their own at their expense. The hunter is responsible for their own accommodations; however, the Fort Belknap Fish & Wildlife Department can provide recommendations on nearest establishments if desired. The Fort Belknap Fish & Wildlife Department is responsible for the management of all hunting activities on reservation lands through the Fort Belknap Fish & Wildlife Code (Title X). Tribal members can hunt all categories including, deer, elk, moose, antelope, mountain lion, upland game, turkey, and waterfowl. A bighorn sheep permit is only authorized through a special permit through the Fort Belknap Community Council, the governing body. Non-member hunting includes antelope, deer (quota), mountain lion, upland game, pheasant, waterfowl, wild turkey, as well as recreational prairie dog shooting. The big horn sheep hunt is only authorized by the Fort Belknap Community Council through a special permit. Fishing is also offered for both Tribal members and non-members. The Fort Belknap Fish & Wildlife Department collaborates with the Montana state Fish, Wildlife and Parks in management of big horn sheep. Currently the state allows one permit as does Ft. Belknap. The Little Rockies include a split jurisdiction between the state of Montana and the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, therefore permits valid in one jurisdiction are not valid in the other. Revenue generated by this conservation permit is allocated by the Fort Belknap Community Council to the Fort Belknap Fish and Wildlife programs.
