DONATION: A very special piece is going up for auction at Wild Sheep Foundation! This is one of the very first pieces I carved. After a deployment in 2009. Upon return from the desert, I came to Texas for training. I stopped on the way to visit a family friend Doyle Smith, a master engraver a Marine and an amazing person. I brought him a small carving as a gift. As I sat in his home, I was looking at all of his amazing rifles he had engraved. He told me nobody could engrave this stuff with just a Dremel and chisels, etc. We spoke about art and engraving. He asked me what I had in my hand. I gave him what I had brought. After careful examination of the piece, he asked quietly, "Did you carve this with a Dremel?" I responded, "Yes sir". With a tear in his eye, he looked around at all of his masterpieces and spoke, "You will be better than I'll have ever been in my lifetime!" We sat quietly as I still looked around. He then took me to his shop and showed me a few pointers. I left a rifle with him. After training I went back, and he had engraved my 270. I took that rifle on my first Aoudad hunt in New Mexico. Upon returning to cell service, I received a call that Doyle had passed away around the same time as I had taken my ram with the gun, he had engraved for me. I came home and finished this piece with a few chisels and a Dremel. "My first rifle piece a 270". In life we meet those that will change us forever and will spark our purpose, Doyle Smith was one of those to me. This piece is being auctioned on Friday Legacy Night. A fitting night and name for this is my Legacy Piece that started it all!
