New Mexico Desert Bighorn Sheep Permit
In 2012 the New Mexico Legislature created a second Special Bighorn Sheep Permit. Therefore, this will be the second year the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will auction a special desert bighorn sheep permit AND a Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep permit. NMDGF is pleased to have selected the Wild Sheep Foundation to auction this permit. As authorized by state law, the Bighorn Sheep Enhancement Program will receive 90% of the proceeds for projects to benefit bighorn sheep with 10% of the proceeds retained by the Wild Sheep Foundation. Anyone, including previous special permit holders, may submit a bid to obtain the 2014 special desert bighorn permit unless their hunting privileges have been revoked. The permit may be transferred by the successful bidder to an individual qualified to hunt.
During the first state-wide desert bighorn hunt in 2012, 15 of 20 harvested desert bighorn were measured as B&C record book rams. This includes the new state record 191 0/8 ram from the Ladron Mountains harvested by 13 year-old Chase Willis, and a 187 0/8 ram harvested in the Big Hatchet Mountains. There are 6 populations with hunts for the 2014 season.
The successful bidder must select by June 1, 2014 one hunt from any unit open for desert bighorn sheep hunting in New Mexico, including: Peloncillo Mountains (Unit 27), the Hatchet Mountains in (Unit 26), the Fra Cristobal Mountains (Unit 20), the Caballo Mountains (Unit 20), the Ladron Mountains (Unit 13), the San Andres Mountains (White Sands Missile Range portion of Unit 19 only). Hunt dates run from August 1 through December 31. Some restrictions apply on the private land hunt in the Fra Cristobal Mountains and on the White Sands Missile Range. For specifics on these hunts contact NMDGF bighorn sheep biologists Eric Rominger (505) 476-8045 or Elise Goldstein (505) 476-8041 or visit with them at their booth.
A 5% buyer’s premium will be added to the final bid price of each special permit sold, unless prohibited by statute. Proceeds will be dedicated to WSF Conservation Initiatives. If the winner of this item refuses to pay the premiums required, the item shall be offered to the next highest bidder for the price he/she bid.
