The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is proud to announce the donation of one desert bighorn sheep permit to the Wild Sheep Foundation for auction to the highest bidder at the 2012 WSF Sheep Show in Reno, Nevada.
Restoration of desert bighorn sheep in Texas has been an ongoing project since the 1950s. Through the cooperative efforts of the Wild Sheep Foundation, Texas Bighorn Sheep Society, private landowners, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, we have successfully restored desert bighorns in Texas to the population levels of the late 1800s.
The permit provides the opportunity for one hunter to hunt for the next available desert bighorn ram on one of the following State of Texas Wildlife Management Areas: Elephant Mountain, Sierra Diablo, or Black Gap. Based on recent increases in bighorn and permit numbers in Texas, the hunt will most likely occur between September 1, 2012 and July 31, 2013. The hunt will be for 10 days and TPWD will provide a camp and guide. Some of the largest desert rams in recent years have come from the Lone Star State!
