Nevada has 314 mountain ranges, more than any other lower 48 state. This vast and rugged canvas known as the Great Basin is naturally suited to harbor wild sheep. Through the vision of wildlife biologists and passionate support from sportsmen, bighorn restoration efforts have resulted in the statewide estimate of almost 9,000 desert bighorn sheep! The 2016 Nelson desert bighorn Heritage Tag is open to all desert bighorn hunt units (approximately 50 units) except for unit(s) where the 2015 Heritage Tag harvest occurred. The season dates for most units are August 1 through December 31, 2016 (4 units have restricted access, season date restrictions, and special requirements). The 2013 desert bighorn hunt season was a banner year with 247 rams harvested, 19 rams 170+ B&C from 7 different hunt areas, and the largest ram scoring 182 3/8. Standard tag eligibility provisions do not apply to this tag. Nevada’s bighorn restoration program is supported in large part by the auction of this Heritage desert bighorn tag.
